Engolasters Lake holds great historical significance in Andorra, both for its legends and its role in the country's modernization.
Origin of the Name
According to popular tradition, the name Engolasters means "swallowing the stars," as the lake, surrounded by a dense pine forest, does not reflect the stars in its dark waters. Another theory suggests that the name may derive from the Provençal word estier (canal or stream) or the Latin aestuarium (water basin).
The Legend
A well-known legend tells that the lake was formed over an ancient village of non-believers that was swallowed by the waters as punishment. It is also said that on full moon nights, witches would gather at the lake to bathe naked. If the village men spied on them, the witches would turn them into black cats. These practices are believed to have disappeared after the construction of the dam and the installation of Radio Andorra's antennas in the early 20th century.
The construction of the Engolasters dam led FHASA to build a hydroelectric plant (starting from the lake and descending to the plant located on the CG-2 road). This plant used the steepest gradient of the three existing in Andorra, allowing for the highest potential energy production. The system used a catchment area of 158 km², including 27 km² from the Madriu River and 10 km² from the Perafita River. The water collected from the Valira and Madriu rivers converged at Engolasters, where it was channeled under pressure through a 1,250-meter tube to the plant’s generators.
Today, the Encamp Hydroelectric Plant is recognized as a Cultural Heritage Site of Andorra due to its granite architecture and its role in the modernization of the country. The FEDA hydroelectric plant, the main source of electricity in Andorra, also houses the Electricity Museum (MW).
This museum offers visitors a comprehensive history of electricity in Andorra. Visitors can explore the control center, the operating turbines, and both permanent and temporary exhibitions, including the “Paths to Progress” photographic exhibition, which tells the story of Andorra’s road construction and the role FHASA played in modernizing the country’s infrastructure.
